Human Services

We invest in solutions to improve the quality of life for people in need in metro Atlanta.

Mr. Whitehead came from modest means as the son of a Baptist minister, who raised him and his brother after their mother died. He grew up with a commitment to care for others, giving generously to church missions, orphanages and the Salvation Army.

The Foundation carries on Mr. Whitehead’s philanthropic legacy by investing in human services, which are a significant part of our average grants portfolio (see graph). We focus on major initiatives to strengthen safety net services, build economic and housing security, and ensure opportunity is available to all.

We direct our giving for homelessness through the United Way of Greater Atlanta’s Regional Commission on Homelessness, and do not consider program support outside of the Commission’s priorities.

We do not fund emergency assistance, individuals, operations or organizations that do not serve metro Atlanta.
